Recently, a friend emailed me this.

“I have seen your work and love how you transform spaces just by adding just the right accents.  I need help in adding some finishing touches to our living room.  What can I do with the left side of my bookcase? How can I accessorize my coffee table? And the window? Should I add drapes?  All suggestions are welcome!”

We wrote a post about styling a round coffee table like hers. You can read more about that here, and a post about styling her bookshelf here.

Today we tackle the question about her window. Here’s the photo she sent. As you can see, there is both a bulkhead to the left and a vertical projection which present an obstacle and make fully functional drapes problematic.

The first question we always ask when it comes to window treatments is what purpose do they need to serve? Is there a need for privacy? Light control? Her response was “I just want it to look nice”.

Drapery and window treatments can certainly do that. They really finish off a room and make it feel “fully dressed”. In her case, the bulkhead and vertical projection to the left of the window is the big obstacle. So here are a couple of suggestions we have for her.

Firstly, a simple set of side panels in a sheer gauzy white linen-look fabric would play nicely off the contemporary style of her room. The key for her is to use a simple drapery rod with plain end caps. There is no room for decorative finials but the result will look classic and pretty just the same.

Secondly, a layered solution. We added matchstick blinds for more textural interest and to give the window a bit more visual weight and importance.

A third option would be to use simple roman shades in a lovely natural linen colour or white would also look crisp.
